Charles Hardin Holley

Known as Buddy Holly, was a prominent figure for Rock and Roll in the 1950’s. He was born in 1936 in Lubbock, Texas to a musical family during the Great Depression. He learned to sing and play guitar from his family. Similar to Elvis Presley, Holly was influenced by country music and rhythm and blues. He performed from a young age in many different talent shows, sometimes with his brothers, until he performed on television in 1952. In 1955, Holly decided to pursue his career in music after opening for Elvis Presley, one of his major influences at the time.

Buddy Holly decided to change his style towards pure rock and roll. He was unhappy with the lack of control he had with his first record studio and eventually they refused to keep him on. He then found another record company to work with that he had much more success with. Holly ended up recording some songs under his band’s name, The Crickets, because of obligations he still had with his previous contract. Holly and his band would go on to do tours together and have songs topping the charts.

As time passed, Holly became unhappy with his manager. He tried to fire his manager, but his band decided to keep the manager. After this, Holly split away from the band. In need of money, he formed a new band and went on tour through the Midwest. Unfortunately, the plane that was taking Holly to the next show in Moorhead, Minnesota crashed and all passengers were killed in the accident.

Holly was credited with setting the example of the traditional rock and roll lineup of having two guitars, a bass and drums. He was a major influence in the popular music of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton and Elton John. In 1986, Holly was inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame. Later Rolling Stone ranked Holly at number thirteen on its “100 Greatest Artists” lists. Holly has earned his name among the stars and it is a pleasure to dedicate a star to him.
