Kurt Cobain

Kurt Donald Cobain became the symbol for the Generation X, often called the MTV generation. His band, Nirvana, was labeled the flagship of the generation. But Cobain was often uncomfortable and frustrated with this label as he felt that the public has misinterpreted his message. Nevertheless, Cobain and Nirvana ended up popularizing the subgenre of alternate rock known as “Grunge.” Cobain was the lead singer, guitarist and primary song writer for the band Nirvana.

The Beatles were an early influence on young Cobain. His family recalled that he had sung “Hey Jude” when he was only two years old. He even named John Lennon as one of his idols in some of his journals. But the young Cobain had a rough time in his early years. He had fostered an interest in music since a young age, but the event of his parent’s divorce at nine years old is what shifted him on to the path he would follow. He was ashamed of not having a traditional home life and rebelled against his family every chance he could. Cobain’s father insisted on him participate in sports; to which Cobain responded by losing on purpose just to disappoint his father. Cobain was sent to a therapist in hopes of improving his actions with no success and was eventually sent to live with a friend’s family. It was with this family that Cobain found a religious ideology that would be important to his personal life and beliefs. In school he was often a loner, which he preferred. The disassociation from others suited him well. In continuing his rebellious ways, Cobain would often draw inappropriate sketches in school and was arrested for vandalizing pickup trucks with controversial messages.

Eventually Cobain would find himself in the punk rock scene. He enjoyed the ideals and lifestyle of the people I met. He had a hard time finding anyone to play with until he found Krist Novoselic. Cobain continuously asked Novoselic to build a band with him until finally Novoselic agreed. Novoselic would be another founding member of Nirvana. They worked with a number of drummers before recording an album with Chad Channing, before settling in with Dave Grohl. Together the trio would record their breakthrough song “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

Cobain dealt with a lot of personal struggles through his life. He struggled with heroin addiction, illness and depression. He had difficulty dealing with his fame and personal image, often feeling the media attacked him. He would come to be found dead in his home in 1994 due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. The circumstances of his passing became a topic of public discussion and debate. Cobain and his band mates would be inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame posthumously in 2014.

In Cobain’s final note, he had said that “it’s better to burn out than to fade away.” While Cobain had chosen to blow out his candle, we dedicate a star to his memory in hopes that its light will forever shine, guiding any lost souls towards hope as he had done so in life.
