Mickey Rooney

Mickey Rooney was an American actor of film, television, Broadway, radio and vaudeville. During the peak of his career, between the ages of 15 to 25, he made forty-three films. He ultimately appeared in over 300 films and was one of the last surviving stars of the silent film era with one of the longest careers in its history. During his career, he would receive four Academy Award nominations and five Emmy Award nominations, winning one of them. In his youth, Rooney was considered a genius and the greatest actor of them all.

Rooney first performed in vaudeville as a child and would make his film debut at the age of six. At thirteen he would play the role of Puck in the play, A Midnight Summer’s Dream, and again in the 1935 film adaptation. Rooney was a top box office attraction from 1939 to 1941 and never rose to such heights again. He was drafted into the war during World War II and returned to find that he couldn’t find much work since he was too old for child roles and too short for adult roles. But Rooney was a king of comebacks and would often rise and fall throughout the rest of his career.

After his death in 2014, it was said that he was “the original Hollywood train wreck.” He struggled with alcohol and pill addictions and remarried a number of times. Although he made millions during his career, he had to file for bankruptcy and died owning medical bills and back taxes. His estate ended up dwindled down to a worth of only $18,000. Despite his difficulties, he still was an amazing actor with an incredibly long career. We dedicate a star in this actor’s name honoring his long time in the entertainment industry. His works are still enjoyed to this day.
